Postpartum depression is a serious form of depression that occurs in approximately 1 in 7 women shortly after giving birth. Postpartum depression is caused by a combination of rising hormone levels and the stress of raising a child, leading a mom to feel sad, hopeless, and guilty. Synergy Research Centers strives to find an effective treatment for postpartum depression, currently running a postpartum depression clinical research study at our two San Diego locations.

After giving birth, life quickly gets very hectic. Suddenly you have a new human who is utterly dependent on you to survive. As a plethora of new responsibilities gets heaped upon you, the last thing you want to deal with is postpartum depression. Unfortunately, postpartum depression is increasingly common, with around 15% of new mothers experiencing symptoms of PPD. That is why Synergy Research Centers is offering a postpartum depression research study to find new treatments for PPD.

What is Postpartum Depression (PPD)?

Postpartum depression is a form of depression that only makes itself present after you have given birth. Symptoms of postpartum depression can begin either directly after giving birth, up to a year later, or sometime in between.

What are the Symptoms of Postpartum Depression?

Symptoms of postpartum depression can range anywhere from mild to severe, depending on the individual and their circumstances. Here are a few of the most common symptoms of postpartum depression:

    • Fatigue and constantly feeling tired
    • Isolating yourself from family and friends
    • Difficulty sleeping
    • Refusing to eat
    • Feelings of sadness and hopelessness
    • Constantly overwhelmed with the responsibilities of being a mother
    • No longer interested in activities and things you used to enjoy
    • Lack of interest in your baby
    • Thoughts of inflicting harm to the baby or yourself
    • Intense guilt and feeling worthless

What is Postpartum Depression Treatment?

In many cases, postpartum depression will go away on its own within three months of giving birth, however experts suggest getting treatment as soon possible. 90% of women find successful treatments that effectively manage symptoms of PPD, and here are a few of the most common treatments:

Antidepressants and Other Medications for PPD

Antidepressants are a great way to treat symptoms such as appetite changes and sleep pattern issues. While there is some debate about whether you should take antidepressants while breastfeeding, with medical supervision from your doctor it is completely safe.

Postpartum Depression Therapy

Psychotherapy is a great way to help treat the symptoms of postpartum depression, giving you the emotional support you need to understand the wild changes in the way you feel. A therapist can also help you think of realistic goals that can help you overcome PPD.

Clinical Research Studies

There are many research facilities that are trying to find more effective and efficient postpartum depression treatment. To do so, they will run clinical research studies that provide free treatment for mothers with postpartum depression, and these studies can oftentimes provide the latest and greatest treatments for PPD.
