In the United States alone, 29.1 million people suffer from diabetes mellitus. Diabetes remains to be one of the leading underlying causes of death. With such high numbers of diagnosed individuals it is crucial that the community continue to search for a cure. Through scientific research and evaluation, experts have joined together to find a cure in the fastest, safest, most efficient way possible.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus, often referred to as diabetes, is a long-term metabolic condition that causes high blood sugar levels due to the body being incapable of producing necessary insulin levels or not responding correctly to insulin. Diabetes is separated into two different types, known as type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is the much more severe form of diabetes that wreaks havoc on the body of those afflicted. Also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, this form of diabetes results in the body’s immune system staging an attack on the pancreas. For some unknown reason, the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, impairing the ability of the body to measure glucose in the blood and regulate blood sugar levels. This leads to sugar staying in the blood and the cells in the body starving from a lack of glucose. Along with starving the cells, the high blood sugar is detrimental to the health of the eyes, nerves, kidneys, and heart.

What are Common Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes?

The symptoms of type 1 diabetes pop up rather quickly, so it is important to go to the doctor at the first appearance of any symptoms. Here are a few symptoms of type 1 diabetes:

  • Frequent Urination. If you are urinating a lot, especially at night, it could be a symptom of type 1 diabetes. The urination is a sign that the kidneys are trying to rid themselves of the excess sugar in the blood by getting rid of water.
  • Weight Loss. The frequent urination can lead to dehydration, and constant dehydration can lead to unintended weight loss. The weight loss can also be a result of losing sugar to the blood and urination instead of your cells using them.
  • Extreme Thirst. The aforementioned dehydration from frequent urination will also lead to extreme thirst.
  • Feeling HungryWhen you have high blood sugar, that means your body isn’t efficiently burning all of the food you consume and using it as energy. Since you are not using all of your calories, you are often feeling hungry.
  • Blurred Vision. High blood sugar can lead to blurred vision, as sugar in the lens of the eye can suck the water from the eye. This can change the shape of your eyes’ lens, resulting in blurry vision.
  • Exhaustion. As a result of you not getting all of the calories you should be when eating, those with type 1 diabetes can often feel exhausted.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is the more common and less serious form of diabetes, where you can still produce insulin but the cells do not use it as well as they should. Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes can be caused by lifestyle choices in conjunction with genetic factors. Some factors that can cause type 2 diabetes includes the aforementioned genetic factors, being overweight, excess glucose in the liver, and poor communication between cells.

What are the Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes?

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes are very similar to symptoms of type 1 diabetes, but oftentimes in a less severe form. Some symptoms and signs of type 2 diabetes includes:

    • Frequent urination
    • Thirst or dry mouth
    • Unexpected weight loss
    • Increased hunger
    • Foot pain or numbness
    • Frequent infections
    • Blurry vision

What are the Best Treatments for Diabetes?

When it comes to treating diabetes, the first step will be lifestyle changes. The limitations when it comes to processing sugar and high blood sugar levels means that healthy eating is essential. Doctors will also suggest regular exercise, especially for those with type 2 diabetes. An essential part of any diabetes treatment plan is monitoring blood sugar levels, including taking medication to regulate blood sugar. These diabetes medications can include insulin therapy and other treatments. Unfortunately, there is no cure for diabetes, but there are drugs and medications to help control symptoms.
