Social Anxiety Research Trial with Liquid CBD
Social anxiety can have a negative effect on a person’s self-esteem, health, relationships, academics, career, and overall quality of life. Although social anxiety is treatable, current treatments don’t work for everyone. At Synergy Research Centers, we’re dedicated to doing our part to advancing medical science and finding solutions to social anxiety and other disorders.
Currently, we’re enrolling participants in a clinical trial for a promising new treatment for social anxiety: liquid cannabidiol (CBD).

What is social anxiety disorder?
Social anxiety (also referred to as social phobia) is a disorder characterized by intense, chronic feelings of nervousness and fear of social situations. People who suffer from social anxiety worry excessively about scrutiny, judgment, and rejection. Their fears often arise before, during and after social encounters. The severity of social anxiety symptoms vary from one individual to the next. One person may be high-functioning with symptoms that are hardly noticeable by others, while another may have more obvious symptoms, such as difficulties holding down a job or forming relationships at all. Although the function ability varies in intensity depending on the individual, the emotional and psychological symptoms are similar.
People who suffer from social anxiety typically experience persistent worry and/or avoidance of normal social situations, such as:
- Conversations with strangers
- Speaking on the phone
- Talking in a work meeting
- Small talk at a party
- Entering a room full of people
- Parties
- Group activities
- Dating
- Eating in front of others
Physical symptoms may include:
- Sweating
- Shaking
- Rapid heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing
- Out-of-body sensation
- Digestive problems
- Dizziness
- Muscle tension
- Rigid body posture
- Overly soft voice
The excessive worry and physical symptoms of social anxiety can begin weeks before a social event or even continue for some time afterward, with the individual worrying about how they behaved or how they were perceived during the event.
How is social anxiety treated?
There are several types of treatment available for social anxiety disorder. Some people are able to find relief from their social anxiety symptoms with cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT), such as exposure therapy, cognitive restructuring, and social skills training. For others, a combination of psychotherapy and medications such as Paxil or Zoloft helps ease their symptoms and allows them to engage with others more comfortably. Support groups, mindfulness strategies, and cardiovascular exercise can also be beneficial.
Current treatments for social anxiety do not work for everyone, however, so researchers continue to work toward the development of new, more effective treatments for social anxiety. Today, cannabidiol (CBD) is showing promise as a treatment for managing symptoms of social phobia.

Recent studies have shown that low, controlled daily doses of cannabidiol (CBD) can reduce the intensity of social anxiety symptoms. These clinical trials have involved study subjects between the ages of 18 and 25 whose social anxiety symptoms failed to respond to at least 5 cognitive behavioral therapy sessions. Participants received between 200 and 800mg of CBD, a non-intoxicating component of Cannabis sativa, daily as an adjunct treatment to their psychotherapy. One study included 4 weeks of daily CBD doses and another ran for 12 weeks. In both studies, participants reported a significant decrease in the intensity of their symptoms. By week 12 of the longer study, the participants self-rated at a 42.6% decrease in anxiety levels, and measured at a 50.7% decrease on the standardized Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A).
