Clinical trials are an important part of developing new treatments. Research participants who suffer from certain illnesses or conditions gain access to promising new treatments before they’re available to the general public. In turn, their participation helps researchers understand more about their condition and how to effectively treat it. But there’s a third category of participants in clinical research that cannot be overlooked: the healthy volunteer. Clinical researchers need healthy subjects, too. Read on to learn more about healthy studies and why they’re necessary.

Healthy studies are clinical trials that involve participants with no known health issues. The exact definition may differ slightly from one trial to another. One study may require that the patient takes no medications at all, for example, while another study only prohibits certain types of medications. As part of a clinical research trial, a healthy volunteer may receive treatment for an illness or condition they do not have. (It’s important to note that this phase of the research process comes only after significant pre-clinical research.)
Healthy volunteers help to provide comparison data for researchers studying the effects of the treatment on patients who do have the illness or condition. Although the healthy study subjects will not directly benefit from the trial their participation plays a vital role in helping researchers develop new treatments for those who need them most.

Why are healthy volunteers needed for clinical research?

Healthy research subjects are needed at different phases of the medical research process:

  • When a new technique or treatment is developed, healthy volunteers are needed to help to establish a “normal” baseline for the research.
  • Healthy participants are needed during the early stages of clinical research to help establish the safety, dosage, and side effects of a new drug or treatment.
  • In later phases, healthy volunteers serve as “control groups” who are given the same treatment as a patient group with a specific illness or condition. In many cases, the volunteers share characteristics with the patient group, such as age, ethnicity, or gender, and the data between the two groups is compared.

Healthy patient studies help researchers gain a deeper understanding of the illness or condition they’re studying as well as the effectiveness of the treatments they’re developing.

How do I find studies for healthy volunteers?

We’re always looking for healthy volunteers to participate in our research trials at Synergy Research Centers.  We are the leading clinical trial center in San Diego County that conducts inpatient and outpatient investigational studies. If you’re interested in participating as a healthy volunteer, we’d love to hear from you. Please take a look at our Clinical Trials FAQ to answer your initial questions and then fill out our enrollment form. We’ll get back to you to answer any more questions you may have and to discuss your eligibility.
